Dental hygiene and you

Maintaining good oral hygiene is one of the best ways of preventing the need for expensive, sometimes painful dental treatments. There are lots of different ways you can keep your hygiene standards up, and your dentist, like my Reading dentists, has probably already told you about most of them. First of all, you need to ensure you’re brushing your teeth for around two minutes, twice a day with an appropriate tooth brush. Electric brushes are best for your teeth and gums, but traditional brushes are fine too. Using mouthwash is a great way of improving hygiene standards as well.

One hurdle which catches most people out is regular visits to a dentist. If you don’t visit your dentist at least every six months, you may never know about the health of your teeth and gums. As a result, any existing problems such as gum disease could go unchecked and get steadily worse. Flossing is another great way to combat problems with your gums, and is also another thing which most people forget about. Crucially, try and avoid eating too many sugary foods. I’ve got a sweet tooth, but I try and avoid sugary foods like chocolate as often as I can, and I avoid fizzy drinks completely. In all honesty, I’m motivated more by vanity than by the potentially high cost of dental work. I want my teeth to stay as white, clean and straight for as long as possible, because there’s nothing less attractive than bad teeth and poor oral hygiene.
